Rotarians:
I would like to report on our progress as we work towards establishing a location in Slidell for Safe Harbor. Al, Joan, Melody and myself have met with the individuals at the Caring Center with the idea of getting information about a battered women’s shelter. We have learned that Safe Harbor can only keep a woman for 45 days, but they are able to stay at the Caring Center for up to six months. If Rotary could help the Caring Center to expand its facilities they could possibly include battered women.
There are 12 Rotary clubs within the area served by these facilities which could help with the expansion. An expansion would cost between $120,000 and $150,000. If each of the 12 clubs would make a donation of $10,000, Safe Harbor could then lease a portion of this expanded facility.
At this point we are still gathering more information but we look forward to the day when we can once again serve these battered women with a local facility here in Slidell.
