Rotarian Matt Meyers was on a quest to protect St. Tammany children at school from drug overdoses when he applied for a grant with the maker of Narcan, Adapt Pharma.

Narcan is a nasal spray used for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose. While there have been no opioid overdoses in parish schools, Meyers wants them to be prepared before it can happen.

“We no longer live in a world where experimentation under the bleachers might result in being grounded and would get you in a bit of trouble,” said Meyers. “The drugs our children have the potential for contact with are so potent that a dose the size of a sesame seed is enough to kill one child if not more.”

Experimental drug use is not the only concern for youth. Accidental exposure to prescription medications such as pill or pain patches can cause an overdose, as well.

Thirteen schools will have Narcan available, and it will be administered by school resource officers. The project was coordinated with a variety of first-responder agencies, including the police department, the fire department, the sheriff’s and coroner’s office.  The coroner’s office will provide training for law enforcement officers, and first responders will administer the Narcan.

“I’ve received support from Covington, Mandeville, Madisonville and Slidell police chiefs,” said Meyers. “Covington Mayor Cooper and Police Chief Lentz gave me tremendous support and have been truly proactive in terms of opiate overdose death prevention.”

Meyers intends to take the project national through other Rotary organizations. He’s already worked with a Rotarian in Maine who is implementing the program throughout the state.

Rainbow Child Care Center is a non-profit, United Way Partner agency that offers care for children ages one through five. It was started in 1983 as an outreach mission of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and Macedonia Baptist Church. It moved to 121 Kingspoint Boulevard in 1990.

When the center was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, local Rotarians and Rotary International funding helped to rebuild the facility.

The Rotary Club of Slidell is collecting Shoes for Orphan Souls.  These shoes are part of the largest humanitarian aid projects sponsored by Buckner International, a global Christian ministry dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable children, families and elders.  According to the Buckner Shoes for Orphan Soul’s website, ap air of simple shoes can go a long way to preventing disease from hookworms and other parasites, as well as protect feet from injury.  In many communities, they allow children to attend school who would not have been eligible due to lacking of the required footwear.

The donations will be distributed overseas, as well as in the United States, to vulnerable children and orphans.  Since 1999, more than 2.5 million pairs of new shoes have been distributed to children in 74 countries.

Rotary International District 6840, made up of Louisiana and Mississippi chapters, last year collected 1,494 pairs of shoes and 1,390 pairs of socks for distribution.

Buy a new pair of shoes and socks.  Sneakers and athletic shoes are best.  The greatest need is for sizes Youth 1 - Adult 7.  Bring these new socks and shoes to our regular meeting.

You can find information about Shoes for Orphan Souls at www.buckner.org/shoes.

The Christmas Party has been set for this year.  We will be celebrating Christmas at the Newton's on December 12th.  Last year the Newton's were so gracious to host our party and they have offered again to share their home with us.  Thank You Bill and Sharon
